Fish 1 and 2 are Truetype font families featuring silhouettes and outline characters of fishes. Each font contains 95 characters altogether. Of these, in each case, 66 are silhouettes of individual fishes, 9 are outlines of individual fishes showing internal detail, and 17 are composites consisting of groups of fish silhouettes. The remaining 3 characters are silhouettes of birds. All the characters were hand-drawn in Font Monger or Fontographer, using published drawings in various books on fishes or cards in Richard Wald's Fish Stack as guides. The font is intended to be used for decorative purposes, e. g., for borders or headings or whatever. On my Stylewriter II the best results are obtained between 24 and 72 points.
Fish 1 and 2 were designed to work together to produce pleasing arrangements of characters. They have two features facilitating this end.
1. Firstly, both fonts have the same set of key assignments, so that a given key stroke will produce the same kind of character (silhouette, outline, group, bird, or nothing at all) in each case). This feature facilitates the substitution of characters from one font to the other within a composition, and makes playing around with different character arrangements easier and more pleasant.
2. Secondly (and more importantly), "bolding" a character in programs that support font families (e.g, Word 5.0 and 5.1, Aldus Superpaint 3.5, SimpleText, etc) does not affect its "weight" in any way, but simply reverses it left-to-right. This ability to reverse characters can be very handy for achieving balanced compositional effects in, for example, decorative borders in word processing documents.
The Fish fonts are $5.00 shareware. If you intend to use them, please send me a check for that amount. They are free to those who have already paid the shareware fee for the Pisces 1/1.1 font up-loaded in October of last year. With the exception of the 9 outline characters, the Pisces 1/1.1 & Fish 1 character sets are almost identical, though the key assignments differ; the Fish 2 characters are almost entirely new.
